Broadway the way I remember it in the 1950's was my inspiration for this watercolor painting. This is my third painting of this street. Jolly Joan Restaurant was a favorite for so many of my generation whenever they went downtown. I remember so many of these rainy days and the Broadway Cab was ever present, but not like this one ... It's really a copy of my own car in those days, except mine was a metallic light blue and certainly not a cab. I imagined the year to be around 1951 for this scene. It took a lot of research at the Oregon Historical Society to come up with such a scene.
I began painting as a child. My mother would give me pictures to copy, not trace. She would draw wedding cakes, high heel shoes, couples dancing and never a car or truck. She had been a commercial artist during the nineteen thirties and never stopped encouraging me in the arts. After high school I went to California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco . After art college I returned to Portland, Oregon to pursue the art of dentistry. I retired from dentistry a few years ago (I'm still practicing at the Geriatric Dental Clinic in Portland), but I hope to keep painting until I can no longer hold a brush. Mike. I have just spent a most enjoyable morning going through your entire FAA portfolio. I not only adore and admire your work, but it triggered many childhood memories for me as my mother grew up there in the 40's and we would visit the city often. She passed in 2008. but Portland remained a large part of her identity and soul right to the end. This is a magnificent piece and is a brilliant capture of that era and town. L/F
